Project

Co-funded by the EU, AfricaConnect3 builds on the work carried out by the EUMEDCONNECT (2004-2015), AfricaConnect (2011-2015) and AfricaConnect2 (2015-2019) projects, which have all contributed to supporting the creation and roll-out of affordable, high-capacity research and education networks (RENs) in Africa, both national (NRENs) and regional (RRENs).

The total budget for AfricaConnect3 is €37.5m for a period of four years from 16th of November 2019, with €30m being contributed by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA). The remainder of the funding is provided by the African partners.

The objectives of AfricaConnect3 focus on enhancing human capital development in Africa.

More specifically, it seeks to unlock the potential of education and research through increased access to digital infrastructures and technologies for African education and research institutions.

AfricaConnect3 strives to:

  • Enhance access to tertiary education and research institutions by establishing secure, adequate and affordable network infrastructures.
  • Foster the development of research and education through services, applications and dedicated user support.
  • Build adequate human resource capacities and expertise within NRENs and education and research communities.
  • Raise the awareness of the role of digital transformation for education and research.
