Women in Tech: Catalysts of Change for SDG 5 Advancement in Mauritius

Over the past years, Mauritius has experienced a remarkable increase in women’s involvement in the technology sector, making notable strides towards the attainment of Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality. By shattering barriers and defying societal stereotypes, these women are making a lasting impact on the tech industry, igniting innovation, and serving as inspirations for generations to come. This article aims to delve into the significance of their empowerment in relation to SDG 5, highlighting its role in fostering a society that is more inclusive and equitable.

Women in Mauritius are breaking barriers and excelling in various tech domains, contributing directly to the island’s objective of empowering women and achieving gender equality. From software development and cybersecurity to data science and artificial intelligence, their contributions are reshaping the industry and dismantling gender stereotypes. As women actively participate in startups, lead tech companies, and engage in innovative projects, they demonstrate their expertise and leadership capabilities, challenging traditional norms and promoting inclusive work environments.

Community Support and Mentorship

Some examples are Women in Tech Mauritius, Tech Clubs at Universities, Women Entrepreneurship Development Programs , Hackathons and Coding Bootcamps,  amongst others. These initiatives offer a platform for women to connect, learn from experienced professionals, and gain the necessary skills and confidence to excel in their chosen tech fields, aligning with the nation’s commitment to ensuring women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership.
